Twitching

“Twitching” means “bird watching” in British English. “Twitcher” means “birdwatcher” (a person who observes birds). This hobby has been popular since the Victorian era. In other words, it’s a hobby familiar to British people who have been around for about 150 years. A person called Twitcher observes various birds in England and makes a list. One of the pleasures of them is to see rare birds coming to British from overseas. Sometimes exotic birds appear in British. At that time, the Twitchers will go to the spot where the bird was found to take a picture as soon as possible. If we look at the gardens of British houses, most of them have at least one or two trees that bear red or orange colored berries. These are valuable food for birds during the winter. The British people who know this dare to plant trees that bear fruit in the winter in their gardens. Also, for the same reason, the seeded flowers may not be cut and may be intentionally left dead. There are also many gardens with “Bird tables” and bird feeders called “Bird feeders”. Of course, these are kept all year round, but they are still an indispensable nutritional center for birds during the winter months.

Trainspotting

“Trainspotting” means “locomotive enthusiast”. This hobby was very popular when British trains were steam locomotives, but the number of people doing it these days is decreasing. There is a circle called “Japanese Rail Society” in British. Members of this circle are said to tour the countryside of Japan every year.

Rambling

The nature of British is not as fierce as other countries. There aren’t many high mountains, no volcanoes, no big waterfalls. For that reason, the hobby of “rambling” is popular. “Rambling” means “to take a walk in nature”. The concept of “rambling” is to enjoy the nature of England slowly.

Bellringing

One of the British hobbies is “bell ringing”. Bellringing is an activity called “ringing a church bell.” An old British church has a tower. At the top of the tower are some bells. Each bell has a different size, so naturally it makes a different sound. Pull the rope of the bell and the bell will ring.
People called bellringers ring the bell together. They can make a wonderful melody depending on the timing of ringing the bell.
Recently, bell ringing has become less popular with young British people.

Munro-bagging

“Munro” means “mountains over 3,000ft in Scotland”. The name “Munro” comes from the name of the person who made the list of the mountain for the first time. There are 282 mountains called Munro in Scotland. The hobby of “Munro-bagging” is the activity of “climbing each Munro mountain and checking the list”.

Summary

Japanese people have their own hobbies to enjoy their holidays. When I asked my friends what their hobbies were, they mentioned musical instruments, sports, watching movies and traveling. Each person has different hobbies to enjoy, but I wondered if spending time and money for myself is the same in every country.
